Alexa, the Amazon voice assistant, has been around for a few years now, and with over 100 million units sold, I think I am safe to say that it’s here to stay. And with Alexa Skills, even more so.

Alexa’s voice capabilities can interact with the user, i.e. you, and provide valuable information such as traffic updates and the weather. However, she can do so much more when you’re using her skills.

But what is a skill? A skill is to Alexa what an App is to your smartphone. You can install and uninstall a skill at your convenience on your Alexa device. Each skill brings new and specific voice-driven commands that bring information, actions or products to life and allow Alexa to reach her full capabilities.

7-Minute Workout

If you’re like me, you love to squeeze in a little at home 7-Minute Workout before starting your work day, but are sometimes missing inspiration. Problem solved. Working out at home is now easy, thanks to this great popular skill. And with over 45 new exercises available, it allows you to have a tailored workout session in the comfort of your home. Or, anywhere else for that matter. Indeed, I sometimes use it at work.

These 7 minutes sessions are a great way to increase your metabolism, improve energy and lower stress. Give it a try, I’m sure you will love it. Or maybe love to hate it! Either way, you will get a good sweat session with a great coach.

Curiosity

So, you’re the kind of person that always likes to learn new things every day? With Curiosity skill, you can discover random interesting facts on a multitude of subjects. It’s a little like going into Wikipedia and clicking on any random article to learn something new, but with less effort.

The way it basically works is once you activate the skill, Alexa asks you to choose between two topics. Then it will go in-depth about a fact on the chosen subject. Next, she will ask again to choose between two other topics. And so on until you are done. I find this skill very interesting. And I’ve been using it every day, when it’s not multiple times a day. What can I say, I’m a curious guy!

Good Morning

You know that the best way to kick off your day is with a positive thought. The Good Morning skill helps you achieve this state of mind. Alexa will provide you with an inspiring quote. Or tell you an inspiring story, so that you can start off your day right.

You can also configure this skill with a routine – which is basically a set of commands activated by one skill. For example, opening the lights, starting the coffee machine and telling you a positive quote. For me, I left this one to its basic, i.e. simply telling me an inspiring story to kick on my day.

Inspire Me

Like with the Good Morning skill, Inspire Me is all about positivism. This amazing motivation skill will deliver daily inspirational audio to inspire you and boost your day. As an entrepreneur, my day is full of ups and downs. And Inspire Me is always bringing me back to what’s important. As well as bringing back my smile, regardless of what’s happening.

The way it works is that Alexa will play inspirational audios from one of several famous speakers from all walks of life to get you pumped and ready to conquer the world.

Tomato Helper

Having a hard time focusing? This skill can definitely help you. It’s basically a Pomodoro timer. Since our attention spans are very short, it encourages you to take a short break every 30 minutes. Not only is it beneficial for productivity. But it also helps reduce distractions and can help with blood flow.

When enabling the skill, it basically sets an alarm in 25 minutes. When the alarm goes off, simply say “Alexa, next” and the five minutes break begins. Say “Alexa, next” again and the next 25 minutes timer begins.

I mostly use this skill when I really need to stay focused, and on track. Or, when I need to do some sprint work. Try it, and let me know what it did for your productivity?

Biking Wizard

As a bonus, and because I’m a biking fan, I’m giving you a sixth skill to try out: The Biking Wizard. I’m using this one regularly before planning a bike trip. Alexa will check the weather for me and tell me if the conditions are right for a bike ride today in the place of my choice.

Which Alexa skills would you be enabling? Let us know in the comments.
